Monitoring Diabetes with Freestyle Libre

A FreeStyle Libre sensor provides continuous monitoring of blood sugar over several days. This system allows us to see how your pet is responding to insulin on a daily basis, so we can safely make adjustments to regulate their diabetes effectively.

First Time Users

Prior to your application appointment:

  1. Please download the LibreLink App on your phone for Apple (click here) or Android (click here). This will let you scan readings from the sensor with your phone. Open the app and set it up.
    • If you cannot download or open the app, contact us prior to your application appointment. We will provide a prescription for a reader you can purchase from a pharmacy.
  2. When setting up the app, you should be prompted to setup a LibreView account. After you do so, you can close the app (it won’t do anything until you get the sensor).
  3. Copy this number: 37a0ab994aab5a0f
  4. Go to LibreView.com on your phone or computer and login with the account info you created. This is where you will be able to see all the blood sugar data and share it with your Veterinarian.
  5. In the top right is an icon to open the menu (usually three lines). Click it, and select Account Settings.
  6. Under My Practices, paste that number from above (our practice ID). Click add, and we will now be able to view your pets readings.

Important Info about the Freestyle Libre sensor in pets:

  1. The sensor is designed for humans, not pets. However, veterinarians have found it to work well for dogs and cats.
  2. Make sure and scan the device at least every 8 hours. Data will be lost otherwise.
  3. The sensor is advertised to work 14 days in humans; it will not stay on this long in pets. It can fall off or you may simply get an error message; a reasonable expectation is 5-7 days of use (though we often get more). This still provides at least 10x as much information as a standard 12-hour glucose curve. If your pet manages to remove or disrupt the sensor too soon, a new one may need to be purchased and applied. A t-shirt, onesie, or e-collar can be useful to prevent scratching or bothering the sensor.
  4. It is important to not administer insulin injections within an inch radius of the sensor.
  5. The sensor produces a lot of information; we encourage you not to think too much about the readings unless we ask you to watch for something specific. Pay attention to your pet’s behavior instead of the numbers, and let us know if you have any concerns.
  6. AVC will typically assess the sensor data only twice: once in the first 48-72 hours, and again at the end of its use when we have the complete data. Our team will contact you when data is assessed. If more frequent consultation is necessary or desired there may be additional consultation charges to account for the Doctor’s time.
  7. If insulin dosing changes, we usually wait 7-10 days before making additional adjustments. Typically we recommend applying another sensor 7-10 days after changes as well.
